After the deluge: The records are here,
now someone has to read them

My first job in San Francisco was as a medical
records clerk at a major hospital. I dreaded the
sight of a process server in the doorway.
It meant I had to drop everything, process the
subpoena, and get the records ready for the
copy service, while all my other job duties piled
up. Little did I imagine that, years later, I would
similarly dread the arrival of big stacks of
subpoenaed records, which I had to pick over
and decipher.

If you can find someone
who has an eye for detail
and is thorough to a fault,
you can train that person
to do records review. It is
better to over include than
to under include. You can
always edit what they
produce, but if they miss
something vital, you may
never find out or, if you
do, it may be too late.
