How can new Form Letters be added to QuickLaw

Run the Setup module of QuickLaw (Setup.MDB).

Click on "Form Letters".

Click on the Add button at the bottom.

Enter a good description of the letter, and pick the case type for the letter (don't leave it blank, create duplicates for each case type if they are the same).

Double-click the OLE field next to the case type. Word will load with your default template of bookmarks already inserted for you.

Turn on bookmarks in Word using the menu and Tools/Options and the View tab. Click on "Show Bookmarks". This way the bookmarks will show up on the screen as "I"s.

Review all the bookmarks in the standard template. They are all very useful.

You can add additional bookmarks for data, such as any name from the case's party list, and data in the Case Information screen, and any date from the Case Date screen for that case. Click on the hyperlinks in the previous sentence for a complete list of what is available, and how to add NEW fields to QuickLaw.

When you have finished your form letter close word, and click on the Save button in QuickLaw. You are ready to use your new form letter!

Letterhead

By default, the letterhead will be put into the header of the form letter when it is created. You can stop that by clicking on the "Turn off letterhead" check box for that letter's record.

Corrupted or deleted base form letter

If your base form letter is bad or missing the bookmarks you will need to paste in a good one again. This is complicated.

Open QLData.MDB with a full version of Access 2.0 (you can't use the runtime), and login to Access as QLOwner. There are instructions elsewhere on this site for doing this part.

Open up the table called tblFormLetters.

Copy a good, working letter over the first record, record number 2, called "Blank form letter". If you don't have a record number 2 called "Blank form letter" then paste the good record in at the bottom, and change the name. It must be spelled exactly as "Blank form letter".

Set the Restrict field to Yes.

No double-click the OLE field and edit out all of the text of the letter, leaving only the "normal" bookmarks that you want to use. Save it, and you should be done.

If that fails, download a new QLData.MDB, save it somewhere on your hard drive, open it up with Access 2.0 (login as QLOwner) copy the record from that tblFormLetters database into your QLData.MDB.
